The Power Up - Read Program

The Power Up – Read Program; this program is aimed at encouraging our participating

students to read by example and encouragement. This effort is stamp out illiteracy which is the number one problem of students dropping out school and being incarcerated. We conduct sessions that have themes on how to succeed in life that are brought out in short lectures and positive quotes  like “Knowledge is power”.  Each session has team building period with a History Bee and/or poetry/rap contests.  Sessions conclude with a CBM Mentors Reading positive short stories or fables to the children discussing the moral/message of the story. The program includes educational, cultural and recreational activities and outings that expand students learning while having fun interacting with each other and CBM’s positive role models. The program is carried out at Simon Elementary in Ward 8 in South East, Washington, DC.  Current participants are the entire 3rd and 4th grade students.  The program is new and is being rolled out to include the entire population of students.

Power Up – Read Pledge

by Kelvin Glymph

I will Power Up by Reading, Studying and Learning.  Knowledge is Power.

Education is our passport to the future for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.

No matter my present situation I understand education is the great equalizer and the key to my success.

Now is the time for me to put in the HARD WORK along with Self-Discipline to be a winner in life.

If it is to be it is up to me.

I am a Winner because I Read, Study and Learn.  Always Power Up!
